Steerpike... From Mervyn Peakes' Gormenghast trilogy.
The first two books "Gormenghast" & "Titus" are among my all time favourites, they are just incredible.
I'm not so much a fan of "Titus Alone", the third book, as Peake was heading into dementia when he wrote it and the plot became rather strange and disjointed.
So yes, Steerpike... A wonderful character, twisted, dark and infinitely charming.
Aptly described as a diabolically clever little monster, but like all charming villians... he doesn't end happily.
*Sigh* Why must it always be so?
Wacom, Photoshop, Paintshop & Photo for reference.
masterfully done...
the shading, and highlights particularly, with the dramatic lighting, are truly briliant...
very characterful... ive always thought about reading the gormenghast series, now this has got me thinking about it much more seriously.
Why the bad guys never have the happy ending? Because it's a book?
we all know in real life quite the opposite applies.
I'll be more interested on books where the "bad guy" is not such, just another poor soul on the wrong place at the wrong time whom fate chose as it's playing pawn. Books are much more interesting when the line between good and evil is but a blur the size of the book =3
And as usual... an excellent quality image that screams perfection from every pixel. (Ever wondered how I come up with these corny phrases? Me too)

Oh you should definitely read Gormenghast, oh yes.
Steerpike chooses his own path willingly although his circumstances go a long way towards explaining his character and his actions throughout the story.
I don't want to say too much as I wouldn't like to spoil th books for you if you choose to read them but they're SO worth it.
The Groan family, the castle, the whole world is just incredible and Peake makes it absolutely real.
You have to read the books or I'll find you and "make" you read them.
So do I look for the book under the name of "Gormenghast"? I'll be sure to read it then someday...
it's hard to believe it's been more than half year since I started reading the Lord of the Rings, but due to my current life-activity I haven't read a single chapter in almost two months =/ And I was about to finish book four, too... ah well, I do enjoy reading and from the looks of it, I will not be disappointed with such book. (I'll have to push my brother into buying it for me in the meantime )

I'm also glad that I found another fan of the Gormenghast novels, such an unappreciated series. I need to read it again soon...
